  3. What is health technology assessment (HTA)?

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is the systematic evaluation of health technologies, such as new medical devices, procedures and medicines, in terms of effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and budget impact.

Core elements of HTA

HTA evaluates technologies along effectiveness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and economic and social consequences. Its main elements are disease burden, clinical trial outcomes, health gains, cost-effectiveness, budget impact and public health need.

What is it used for?

HTA is the professional basis of reimbursement (market access) decisions: it helps determine whether a new technology should enter public financing, and under what conditions. Both manufacturers and payers rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs HTA?
Primarily medical device and pharmaceutical companies seeking reimbursement, as well as payers and decision-makers for coverage decisions.
How long does an HTA analysis take?
It depends on the technology and the data required. The exact timeline is set out in every proposal.
